The Breathing Machine

7" x 18" x 6"
welded steel, cellophane, motors, electronic circuitry.
1997

A pair of motors gently pump transparent bellows that change the arrangement of the air within a closed space. The two bellows, at either end of the piece, move at slightly different speeds, subtly changing phase: sometimes they breath in unison, sometimes one exhales while the other inhales its partners breath.

This is a closed, flexible system - fresh air neither enters nor leaves. The appearance of breathing results from changes in the internal air pressure on the machines transparent, cellophane skin.

One observes the subtle movement of 'respiration' taking place within this delicate Machine.

The Breathing Machine has been exhibited in the Art Machines Exhibition at
The Science Museum of Minnesota, St. Paul. 1999
